World of Warcraft: Classic might be just around the corner, so it’s about time to start preparing. We’ve already published a class selection guide, and today we’re focusing on the most important resource of the game, of course, it is gold. Many players who played World of Warcraft back in the day might remember the times when you needed to count every spent penny and the times when gold farmers roamed the Azeroth on their super expensive epic mounts. In vanilla WoW, gold was everything. And we’re here to help you save as much of it as possible. So, without further due, let’s dive in our World of Warcraft: WOW Gold Classic making guide.
They're right, in the sense that nearly every monster drops it and many quests award it. But gold in World of Warcraft Classic, now that's tough to come by. You’ll be seeing rewards in silver and copper that'll cover you in many cases, but rustling up the cash for fancy mounts can be a real challenge.
Professions
In WoW Classic, professions are an integral part of the game and will be important in every phase. While some professions can help to make items that you will use for raiding and PvP, professions are also an excellent way to make gold. If your primary goal is to make gold, some professions are better than others. Below is a tier list for how the different professions rank strictly in terms of making gold.
S-Tier: Skinning
A-Tier: Alchemy, Herbalism, Mining
B-Tier: Leatherworking
C-Tier: Enchanting, Engineering
D-Tier: Tailoring, Blacksmithing
While this tier list should be accurate in general, it is important to note that there are exceptions. Certain Enchanting patterns, Alchemy recipes, and other crafting patterns are very rare and very desirable. If you get lucky and get a rare pattern, such as the pattern for
Lionheart Helm from Ragnaros, you can make insane amounts of gold just by nature of being one of the only people able to make that specific item.
Farming
If making money if your goal, then it’s the latter you’re most interested in. Whether it’s out in the world or within a dungeon, pulling groups of enemies, downing them with AOE, and repeating can net you both raw gold and a variety of items to sell.
When it comes to specifics, it’s going to be a case of what works best for you. You can blast through lower-level content alone, or group up to tackle tougher opponents. Some farming strategies aim for uncommon gear drops to sell on the auction house, while others will be more reliable in offering coin and crafting materials like cloth.
Some classes are stronger at farming than others – Mages particularly excel due to their huge range of AOE and kiting tools – and so your class choice will also influence what might be best to farm for you, and whether you group up or go it alone.
With so many potential locations in which to farm, it’s worth trying out a few different approaches without sinking too many hours into them initially to get a sense for what you find easiest, most enjoyable, and most profitable.
Farming is also a very effective levelling strategy if you’re working in content that’s within your level – either world monsters or dungeons with a group – so if you’re all about that endgame then it’s definitely worth considering along the way. For others, it might only come into play when you specifically need to make money for a big payment like a mount.
Auction House
Making gold from the Auction House is smart. It can also be a bad move. Learning the Auction House takes time. You can buy items off the Auction House and resell them at a higher price. If you do this incorrectly though you’ll lose money. You must understand when a product is gaining value.
Mage portals are great for business. If you’re playing a mage be sure to offer your services in trade chat. Make sure your prices are more reasonable than your competitors. Retail put Mages out of business when flight and portal rooms were introduced. WoW Classic doesn’t have all those conveniences which means a Mage’s services are once again required. I like to imagine Mage’s are like the Uber or Lyft of World of Warcraft. Should we title it Muber or Myft?
You could also charge a reasonable fee for food and drink. Honestly, it’s probably best to do this for free, but if you’re really strapped for cash you could ask for a small tip. The spirit of WoW Classic is to be helpful though don’t forget!
Lock Boxes
As a Rogue, your lock-picking skills can come in handy, and I don’t mean by pick-pocketing an unsuspecting adventurer. You could offer to open lockboxes for a reasonable fee. If you don’t charge for the service another player may tip you for it anyway. Most WoW Classic players are usually friendly. Don’t be surprised if you do receive a tip as a thank you
