A report in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease indicated that CinnaChroma Review Dr de la Monte, a neuropathologist at Rhode Island Hospital, made a statement indicating that during research a previously unknown form of diabetes may have been discovered. Dr de la Monte said it was found that insulin was not just produced in the pancreas, but also in the brain. It was also stated these abnormalities did not correspond to type 1 or type 2 diabetes but reflected a different and more complex disease process which originates in the central nervous system.
Is it really helpful to describe Alzheimer's as "type 3" diabetes? Well, it is true that diabetics are more likely to develop the condition than non-diabetics, but most people who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes don't get Alzheimer's disease, and most people who have Alzheimer's don't have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
This is often the first line of drug therapy for many people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes... metformin, also sold under the trade name Glucophage, was the wonder drug of the early 1990's for type 2 diabetics. The patents for most forms of metformin have expired so that even in the US diabetics can usually buy the drug for about $4 a month, but it remains one of the most useful medications available for increasing sensitivity to insulin and keeping blood sugar levels in control.
